Sending a tank in

Include as much of this as you can:

• Tank dimensions and age since setup
• Substrate — aquasoil, inert gravel, sand, with or without root tabs
• Lighting and photoperiod, CO2 or not
• Fertiliser regime and water change schedule
• Source water hardness if you know it
• What is bothering you about it — the most important line

Photographs straight off a phone are fine. Turn the room lights off, shoot straight on through the front glass, and wipe the outside of the glass first — that last one solves most blurry submissions.

Questions we answer

• Which algae is this, and what caused it
• Why a specific plant is melting, browning or refusing to grow
• Whether a stone or wood is safe for your water
• Whether a layout will work before you fill the tank

Questions we cannot answer

Fish disease diagnosis, anything involving a sick animal, and equipment fault-finding. Those need a vet or the manufacturer, and guessing at them from a photograph does harm.

Aquarium societies and club newsletters may reprint articles in full with attribution and a link, no permission needed. Commercial republication, or reproducing reader tank photographs, needs asking first — the photographs are not ours to give.
